Illinois – Field is a Misnomer

August 28th, 2015

After a long day of biking, not dying, eating good food, and staying up far too late, we decided to get up early and attack the day to make the most of it. Not. Rolling out of bed at 11, I was the first one up and took the time to stretch and gain function. Two days of back to back 25 mile bike rides had taken a bit more of a toll on my legs than expected. Also, we all may have tipped back a few more than we realized during our late night conversation, and were moving a bit slow. Another scrumptious breakfast and packed bags, we went off to see the Chicago Field Museum. five-5121 Today, I opted for public transportation, as my legs couldn’t handle a third day of hauling ass along the river front. Plus taking a bike on the train was not only a PITA, but felt akin to bringing a screaming baby on an airplane. Wandering downtown to the museum, we wondered in and checked out the exhibits. First up was a walk through the ocean animals of today. It felt like a giant taxidermy zoo. With all the animals in their perfect poses behind the smudged up glass. Again, I like to ready any and every plaque, but they were far too numerous for me to do so. So I paced myself, which seems like a weird thing to do in a museum. The following exhibit was the history of the earth, focusing mainly on dinosaurs! Who doesn’t love walking amongst dinosaur skeletons? They massive, fearsome, and crazy to think about. Those things, once had flesh and blood, and ruled this planet before humans were even an idea. I also found out that there have been 6 major extinctions, not just 1! So every time there’s a new time period of dinosaurs, there’s probably been a mass extinction that caused the huge reset. Mind. Blown. five-5146The final stop was the gems and minerals. A much smaller exhibit contained to just a single room, with another being completely devoted to jade. Being a rock hound as a kid, I always find gems and minerals fascinating. But it had now been about 5 hours of walking around and standing while looking at exhibits. Tired, we went back to Abby’s place to relax, have a solid dinner and watch movies. It was nice to just stop again, even if it was for a shorter amount of time, and just lounge. five-5131

I spent the whole next day just working. Writing up posts, going through the enormous amount of photos I’d taken, and other erroneous tasks. Abby was kind enough to let me stay one last night, but before doing so, go see Alex. He’s an improv comedian, and had a show going on this evening. Excited, I wrapped up and we hopped on the train to check it out. The show was hilarious and had me in tears multiple times. It felt like a great way to end my stay here.
